Close-up of table leg joinery — Mist & Mitre workshop

The Maker

Where craft meets
the quiet hills.

Mist & Mitre was born from a love of Australian timber and the belief that well-made things deserve to be used every day. The workshop is in Crafers, among the gums of the Adelaide Hills — a fitting place to work with the wood they share.

Every piece starts with timber selection: understanding the grain, the figure, the history of the wood. From there it's hand tools, patience, and the kind of care that only comes from making one thing at a time.

Timber selection
Every commission starts in the timber store. We choose boards together — or I select for you — based on grain direction, figure, and how the wood will move over time. No two pieces are ever the same.
Hand tool work
The workshop is built around hand planes, chisels and marking gauges. Machine tools do the heavy work; hand tools do the finishing. The result is surfaces that catch light differently to anything machined flat.
Joinery & finishing
Joints are cut to fit, not forced. Finishing — whether oil, wax or lacquer — is chosen for how the piece will be used and where it will live. Everything is tested and adjusted before delivery.
Workshop visits
You're welcome to visit the Crafers workshop by appointment — to see timber in progress, choose your boards, or simply get a feel for the work before committing to a commission.

The Materials

Australian timbers,
each with a story.

Jarrah
Eucalyptus marginata
Deep red-brown with interlocking grain. Exceptionally durable and distinctly Western Australian. Develops a rich patina over decades of use.
Tasmanian Sassafras
Atherosperma moschatum
A cool-climate rainforest timber with a distinctive pale cream to light brown tone and subtle figuring. Light, fine-grained, and beautifully smooth to work with hand tools.
Tasmanian Myrtle
Nothofagus cunninghamii
A cool-climate rainforest timber with a fine, even grain and warm pink-red tones. Beautiful for framing and cabinetry where refinement matters.
Huon Pine
Lagarostrobos franklinii
One of the world's slowest-growing timbers — some trees exceed 2,000 years old. Pale gold, extraordinarily fine-grained, and carries a distinctive resinous scent.
